What is spray tanning?
Spray Tanning is an amazing and popular way to enjoy beautifully tanned skin without going into the sun or a tanning bed. Back when spray tan solution was first introduced to the market, it contained dyes that left the skin orange and streaky looking. Luckily for us, our modern technology has evolved spray tanning into the perfect solution for creating an even, realistic and natural looking tan without UV rays.
How does spray tanning work?
The main active ingredient in spray solution is DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA is derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, and when applied to the skin, reacts with the amino acids in the skin’s outermost layer to create a browning effect. In addition to DHA, the solutions we carry also contain Erythrulose, a keto sugar that reacts similarly to DHA, but with a slower development time, thus adding to the life of your spray tan. This combination is what creates the most natural, longest lasting color.
How do I Prepare for my session?
Clean, Exfoliated, Product-Free Skin is Best!
Day Before Your Sunless Session
Any other treatments or services you may be doing should be done the day before. This includes manicures, pedicures, hair, facials, massage, shaving/waxing, etc
EXFOLIATE! This is a vital step in the preparation of your spray tan. As you learned above in How Does Spray Tanning Work?,the spray tan lives in the top layer of your skin. Your body naturally exfoliates this layer off every 5-7 days on average, so you want to make sure any dead skin cells that are on their way out are scrubbed off and not taking your fresh spray tan with them! It’ll also ensure an even application, so be sure to pay extra attention to areas that tend to be dryer such as knees, elbows, hands and feet.
Please note: if you didn’t have the chance to exfoliate before your session, fret not! We carry a fantastic, inexpensive one-time-use product that you can purchase and use at the salon right before your session. Don’t worry, we got you!
HYDRATE! After you have showered and exfoliated head to toe, apply a nice moisturizer to your skin. Happy, hydrated skin will hold a spray tan longer than sad, thirsty, dry skin. If you don’t already drink lots of water, it’s always a good idea to increase your water intake :)
Day of Your Sunless Session
Shower. Avoid using lotiony body washes such a Dove and Oil of Olay.
Do not apply any lotion, oils, perfume or makeup to your skin after you shower. You can use a little bit of deodorant if you must, but if you do, use it sparingly.
Wear dark, loose fitting clothes, or bring with you to change into afterwards.
What do I do After my session?
First Shower- Please wait 6-8 before showering. This is the optimal time frame for development. Your first shower should just be a quick, warm water rinse without using any soap on the skin. Essentially you’re just looking to remove any excess solution at this point. Avoid exercising or anything that would cause you to sweat prior to your first shower.
Post Care- Extending the Life of Your Spray Tan
Pat Dry. After your showers, gently pat your skin dry. Avoid rubbing your skin with the towel during the life of your spray to make it last longer.
Moisturize! Moisturizing your skin is an important part of extending the life of your spray tan. The best time to apply your favorite moisturizer is right after you shower and pat dry. Avoid using lotions that contain mineral oil.
Shaving- Any shaving should be done with a 3+ blade razor and in a downward motion. Use light, natural, non-alcohol based creams.
Perfumes may be applied to your clothes or your hair. Do not spray directly onto your skin.
Avoid Chlorine. Chlorinated swimming pools and hot tubs can fade the color and shorten the life of your spray tan. Salt water is a better choice, but it will still fade either way if you are in the water for extended periods of time.
HYDRTAE! I said it before, and I’ll say it again… drink lots of water! The more hydrated you are, the longer your spray will last.
